More than 2 million Social Security recipients in Michigan, and millions more nationwide, are in line to receive a cost of living adjustment, or COLA, starting in January 2026, the Social Security Administration announced earlier this fall.
"On average, Social Security retirement benefits will increase by about $56 per month starting in January," the U.S. Social Security Administration said in an Oct. 24 release .
Payments will increase 2.8% at the beginning of the year for recipients of Social Security; Old-Age, Survivors, and Disability Insurance (OASDI); and Supplemental Security Income (SSI).
The 2.8% COLA increase won't be the only change in 2026 . In addition, there will be a higher earnings limits for people who retire early.
