Prime Minister Mark Carney experienced a mixed reception during the coin toss at the Grey Cup game on Sunday night in Winnipeg. The game featured the Montreal Alouettes, champions of the East Division, against the Saskatchewan Roughriders, champions of the West Division, at Princess Auto Stadium.
As Carney was introduced on the field, some sections of the crowd began to boo. The announcer stated, "Now for the coin toss. Joining the team captains is the prime minister of Canada, le premier ministre du Canada, Mark Carney, and the CEO of Coinbase Canada, Lucas Matheson." The booing continued but lessened as players took the field to shake hands with Carney, Matheson, and the head referee.
The referee explained the unique coin being used for the toss, which is associated with Coinbase, the Canadian Football League's official crypto partner. He noted that since the coin does not feature a portrait, "the Coinbase logo will be heads, and the maple leaf will be tails." The captain of the Saskatchewan team called tails.
As Carney prepared to toss the coin, the booing intensified. The coin landed on tails. The following morning, Carney addressed the incident as he arrived for a budget vote in Ottawa. A reporter asked, "You were booed. What does that show you about Western disaffection?" Carney responded, "We represent the entire country. We were cheered as well." He emphasized that he and the provincial premiers were collaborating for the benefit of the country, regardless of political affiliations.
Carney later shared a video of the event on social media, thanking Winnipeg for the invitation and congratulating the Saskatchewan Roughriders for their 25-17 victory over the Alouettes. In the video, the original audio of the crowd was replaced with the song "Can’t Hold Us" by Macklemore and Ryan Lewis.
