GREENVILLE, S.C. —

The Greenville community is mourning the loss of Mary Duckett, who passed away Sunday at the age of 85.

Greenville Mayor Knox White credited Duckett for helping make Unity Park a reality and considered her a close friend.

For decades, White said she was a significant presence in the community.

Duckett served as the president of her neighborhood association and helped bring A.J. Whittenberg Elementary School of Engineering to the Southernside.

Last week, Duckett was able to witness the grand opening of the Honor Tower in Unity Park , the final piece of this massive project.

Her son, Demetric Duckett, said his mom spent her life supporting those who were less fortunate and gave voice to those who are often overlooked.
