Filmmaker Aranya Sahay’s Humans in the Loop has received the Film Independent Sloan Distribution Grant, just as the film secures its qualification for consideration at the 98th Academy Awards. The grant, awarded by Film Independent and the Alfred P Sloan Foundation, supports narrative features that meaningfully explore science or technology and helps them reach wider audiences.

With its US theatrical run completed and all eligibility criteria met, the film is now in contention for the Best Original Screenplay category. Set in a rural data-annotation centre, the story follows an indigenous woman whose work becomes a window into the inequities and ethical dilemmas surrounding machine learning, grounding the conversation in empathy and lived experience.
