A man and a woman have been arrested and charged after a large number of thefts at cemeteries and mausoleums in the GTA.
More than 300 thefts are believed to have occurred in cremation niches in Oakville, Burlington, Toronto, and the Niagara region over the past several months, Halton police said in a press release Monday. The suspects targeted jewelry, decorative cremation urns, keepsakes, and other valuables.
On Nov. 7, officers arrested the two people at a motel in Niagara Falls. Police recovered thousands of dollars worth of jewelry and other stolen items after searching at the motel and in a linked vehicle.
The thefts occurred in the daytime, investigators said. Once inside the mausoleums, the accused would enter niche compartments using a tool and steal jewelry or other valuabl
