MINDEN, Neb. (KSNB) - Kearney County officials are asking residents for ideas on how to repair the iconic dome at the top of the county courthouse in Minden.
The dome is experiencing rust issues that have led to leaks in the room directly below it. The damage is so severe that the area is now unsafe for people to enter the room that accesses the dome.
Kearney County Assessor Jennifer Pittner is leading the preservation project. She said the dome presents unique challenges because of its design.
“The thing that’s unique with it is there’s no internal structure,” Pittner said. “It’s self-supporting, so to take it apart and fix the rust is challenging and they’ve talked about building an internal scaffolding and taking off pieces and there’s different proposals out there.”
