The red lights came on outside the downtown police station on Sunday evening and they weren’t atop a cruiser.
Rather, it was the giant spruce at 190 Brady that got lit up again with hundreds of red bulbs, each in memory of a First Nation life lost to violence.

“This initiative began six years ago in Thunder Bay, born from a vision to raise awareness of injustices faced by Indigenous people,” said Greater Sudbury Police Chief Sara Cunningham at the Tree of Hope event.
GSPS held its first tree-lighting in 2021, along with four other police services. The number of participating departments in Ontario has now grown to 30, noted Cunningham, with each flicking the switch on a string of lights at the same moment.
