One person is dead following a house fire in eastern Maine on Sunday, officials say.

Just before 6 p.m., the State Fire Marshal's Office said it was asked to respond to a house fire at 624 Main St. in the town of Meddybemps. The local fire chief said they believed the homeowner might still be inside.

Meddybemps is a small town of about 150 residents in Washington County in far eastern Maine near the Canadian border.

When firefighters arrived, the home was fully engulfed in flames, and the fire had also spread to a vehicle in the driveway. More than a half dozen area fire departments responded, fighting the fire in heavy snow conditions.
