Just before 10 a.m. Friday, staff from various Clark County schools trickled into Share’s warehouse in central Vancouver and got to work. Some stacked large boxes of canned goods, hygiene products and diapers as if playing a real-world version of the video game Tetris. Others ran their fingers down handwritten checklists to ensure they gathered every item their students need.

This is the behind-the-scenes work necessary to make sure Clark County youth don’t go hungry.

On Nov. 1, more than 60,000 Clark County residents who rely on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program did not receive their monthly stipend due to the federal government shutdown. Although Washington residents have begun receiving their overdue benefits , the future for the food aid program remains on shaky ground
