The NSW government is under pressure to act on laws for medicinal cannabis, with one high-profile MP joining the push for reform.

Independent Sydney MP Alex Greenwich will move a motion in NSW parliament on Tuesday to legislate a legal defence for drivers taking medically prescribed cannabis.

Mr Greenwich, who recently disclosed his use of medicinal cannabis to treat post-traumatic stress disorder, said driving laws in NSW have lagged behind in the space.

"Whether you're someone who needs it for pain management, or anxiety or sleep, it's a very useful tool — unfortunately our driving laws have not kept up to date,"

he said.

Mr Greenwich said the proposed legislation would allow drivers who test positive for cannabis to have the offence overturned in court on medical grounds.
