On the eve of the start of collective bargaining talks between Laurentian University and the union representing its faculty, the union announced it will be filing a challenge under the Canadian Charter of Rights and Freedoms, citing interference by the province in the collective bargaining process.

“Bargaining belongs to us: not the government, not the courts,” Fabrice Colin, president of the Laurentian University Faculty Association , said Monday at a press conference in the student centre on campus.

At issue is a loan agreement the university has with the province that remains in effect until 2038. The agreement includes language that limits the possibility of bargaining the terms of the union’s pension plan.
