The Metropolitan Museum of Art announced the name of the exhibit that will inform the theme of the 2026 Met Gala on Monday: Costume art .

The spring exhibit will “examine the centrality of the dressed body, juxtaposing objects from across the Museum’s vast collection with historical and contemporary garments from The Costume Institute,” the museum said in a news release.

The Met Gala will take place May 4, 2026, with co-chairs and honorary chairs to be announced in the coming months.

The dress code theme is also to be announced but, as has been the case in past years, it will likely tie in with the theme of the spring exhibit.
