SALEM, Mass. —

A man accused of blindfolding and raping a young mother at knifepoint more than 30 years ago was in a Massachusetts courtroom Monday to face charges in the attack.

Darrell Lavoie, 59, of Nashua, New Hampshire, was arraigned Monday in Essex County Superior Court on charges of rape, aggravated rape, assault and battery with a dangerous weapon, and nighttime breaking and entering.

On Nov. 12, 1991, investigators said a man entered the victim’s Peabody home, approached her from behind, blindfolded her and raped her at knifepoint.

"(He said) 'If you do what I tell you, you won’t get hurt,'" prosecutor Jessica Strasnick said, describing the night of the attack. "As she started to scream, he said, ‘Shut up,’ and placed a serrated knife against her neck."
