As part of Veterans Week which runs from Nov. 5 until the 11, Indigenous veterans are specifically acknowledged on Nov. 8 for their service and the unique challenges they faced upon returning home. Known as Anishinabe Zhimaaginishi Giizhigad this day was officially established in 1994 in Manitoba and has since become part of local ceremonies across Canada.

Since the War of 1812, Indigenous peoples have contributed to the military tradition in this country including the First World War and Second World War, the Korean War and beyond.
