CLEVELAND, Ohio — Federal prosecutors have charged a former Ohio Senate candidate with embezzling more than $4.5 million from a Warrensville Heights company he worked for and funneling money into his doomed campaign.

Jonathan Leissler, 44, of Stow also embezzled money from the Fraternal Order of Police Associates, where he served as a local treasurer, and a company that handles politicians’ fundraising accounts, prosecutors say.

Leissler was charged last week in federal court in Akron with three counts of wire fraud. He was charged by way of information, meaning he agreed to skip grand jury proceedings. It typically means a defendant has agreed to plead guilty in the case.

Leissler is scheduled for arraignment on Wednesday in front of U.S. District Magistrate Judge Jonathan Greenberg. L
