The best and the brightest Australian music stars will be coming together for the ARIA awards this week.

Here's what you need to know about the ceremony.

What are the ARIAs?

It's an Australian music awards ceremony — the one with the really pointy silver trophies.

ARIA stands for the Australian Recording Industry Association.

But an aria is also a musical term, with the Macquaire Dictionary defining it as "an elaborate melody for a single voice, with accompaniment, in an opera, oratorio, etc …"

This year, the ceremony is being held at Sydney's Hordern Pavilion.

Triple j Breakfast presenter Concetta Caristo and Nova's Tim Blackwell will be hosting the awards.
