James Franklin has landed a new job, and Penn State’s bank account is better off for it.
Penn State will be paying a whole lot less than the $48 million buyout Franklin was reportedly due when the Nittany Lions fired him last month.
Penn State negotiated a settlement for Franklin’s buyout in recent weeks, giving the former coach roughly $9 million. The news was first reported by the Centre Daily Times .
It was understood that Franklin’s buyout figure would greatly decrease if he took another job.
The terms of Franklin’s 2021 contract extension, obtained by Front Office Sports , included a “duty to mitigate” clause. That clause dictated that whatever salary Franklin received from a future job — coaching or broadcasting — would offset what Penn State owes him.
