South Dakota's highest ranking law enforcement officer is criticizing the state's prison system as officials open another investigation into a suspected drug overdose involving an inmate.
The South Dakota Department of Corrections announced in a Nov. 17 press release that 46-year-old Timothy Tyree died after being found unresponsive in his bed at Mike Durfee State Prison that same day. According to the DOC, Tyree was taken to a nearby hospital where he passed away.
The DOC's news release was followed shortly thereafter by a press release from South Dakota Attorney General Marty Jackley, who announced the Division of Criminal Investigation opened an investigation into Tyree's death.
