BOONVILLE, Ind. (WFIE) - More than 40 people were in a Warrick County courtroom to stand up for animals today, including Vanderburgh Humane Society (VHS) staff and volunteers.

29-year-old Shayna Burko was set to appear after being charged with three felonies for cruelty to animals in January of this year.

VHS says they showed up for the proceedings because they have a long history with the defendant.

VHS first encountered Burko in 2018 when they say they removed animals from her home because of the poor conditions.

“From that first situation, none of those animals survived. She starved them to death in her home. So obviously, our team for many years now has been just so torn up and invested in this case because they love those animals. They personally cared for those animals,” VHS Dire
