It was 2008, and Father Susai Jesu was behind the wheel on a lonely highway in northern Saskatchewan. He had recently moved from India to work in remote Indigenous communities. He was a world away from home.
And, it was his first experience with winter driving.
It was Halloween night, and he had candy in his car for kids in the community. But, he lost control, the vehicle rolled three times and ended up in any icy body of water.
“My car was sinking into the river,” recalled Jesu. “And by God’s grace, I pressed the button and I came out of the car and I was running for a kilometre. Almost, I was dying. I was experiencing my own death.”
