On their first day in office, Edmonton city council was given an overview of city operations and received a preview of how budget deliberations would play out.
Kicking off their four-year term on Monday, councillors learned how their lone employees are the city manager and city clerk, as well as how the city’s corporate structure is laid out as it grapples with a population projected to hit 1.25 million soon and could be reaching two million people within a few years.
To cover the city’s ever-growing costs, city administration is projecting property taxes will need to increase by 6.4 per cent. The draft budget will be released on Thursday and presented to council Nov. 25-26. Deliberations — where council can make changes to the budget — are set for Dec. 1-4.
