A homeowner accused of shooting dead a house cleaner who mistakenly turned up at his front door was charged with voluntary manslaughter in a case which could test the limits of America's 'stand-your-ground' laws.

The self-defence law take away the need to retreat before turning to deadly force when a person is facing threat of death or great bodily harm. 62-year-old Curt Andersen was charged today, and could now face anywhere from 10 to 30 years in prison and a $10,000 (£7,600) fine if convicted.
