CHESAPEAKE, Va. — A handful of parents spoke out about a proposed policy in Chesapeake Public Schools that would govern how employees address students.
The proposed policy requires employees to “refrain from providing to a student his or her preferred personal title or pronouns if such preferred personal title or pronouns do not correspond to his or her sex.”
The policy revision also says a staff member cannot be compelled to refer to other employees “in a manner that violates the staff members’ constitutionally protected rights.”
The policy had its first reading in Monday evening’s School Board meeting. The second reading and final approval will come at the Dec. 8 meeting, but parents took the opportunity Monday to begin sounding off.
