A West Australian senator is calling on the prime minister to denounce the actions of online abusers and trolls.
It comes a day after Ballarat man Sean David Sharman was criminally convicted and handed an 18-month community corrections order for sending racist death threats to the senator earlier this year .
During sentencing on Monday, magistrate Julia Barling expressed concern over the increasing prevalence of online trolling and abusive behaviour.
Since then, Senator Payman's social media page has received a torrent of abusive comments.
"Instead of acting as a deterrent for future offenders, a mix of real accounts and bots have flooded the senator's Facebook page with racist, Islamophobic and sexist abuse, as well as implied death threats," a statement from the senator's office
