The Senior Resident Magistrate Court in Blantyre has granted bail to former Deputy Inspector General of Police, Ackis Muwanga.

Senior Resident Magistrate Asunta Maxwell ruled that the state had failed to demonstrate the need for Muwanga’s continued detention.

“The accused should be bonded with K1 million cash each, present two sureties with K10 million non-cash bond, all travel documents must be submitted to this court, and the accused must not leave the country without the court’s permission,” Magistrate Maxwell said.

Muwanga and Superintendent Laudon Nthinda were arrested on Sunday on suspicion of abuse of office, extortion, and money laundering.
