Ceri Ball, a 74-year-old grandmother from Newport, has tragically died after choking on a piece of steak while dining in Spain. The incident occurred in the coastal town of Peñíscola, near Valencia, where she was on holiday with her husband, Glyn, aged 77. The couple had been enjoying their time in Spain, having a meal together when the choking incident took place. According to an inquest opened by Coroner Rose Farmer at Gwent Coroner's Court, Ceri began choking just moments after taking a mouthful of steak. A provisional post-mortem examination revealed that she died from asphyxiation, obstruction, and choking. Ceri's daughter, Lisa Lisseman, 54, shared that her parents had been in Spain for several months and were scheduled to return home the following week. Lisa recounted the events leading up to the tragedy, stating, "They'd gone out, had a lovely day and went out for a meal. Mum took a mouthful and it got stuck in her throat. Dad said she was unconscious in seconds, and everyone tried to help her. The waiter tried to help her, and someone phoned an ambulance." Despite being rushed to Comarcal de Vinaròs hospital, Ceri's condition deteriorated due to a lack of oxygen. She was pronounced dead on October 17, the day after the incident. Lisa described the desperate attempts made by medical staff, saying, "They got the food out twenty minutes later and restarted her heart. They tried to keep her on machines overnight for me and my sister Helen to get over to Spain, and we didn't make it." Glyn was left to say his goodbyes alone, as the medical team informed him that Ceri's brain had suffered too much damage. In a heartfelt tribute, Lisa expressed her family's grief, stating, "Our beautiful mum, wife, grandmother (Gigi) died in the most tragic of circumstances. She was our matriarch, she was the queen, she was opinionated, but she cared about everyone. We are heartbroken." The family has also expressed their gratitude to The Repatriation Services Trust, a charity that has provided support during this difficult time. Lisa noted, "They've been so amazing. I contacted Steve, and he asked, 'What can we do? What can we help with?' and they've taken that financial strain from us." A complete post-mortem examination is still pending, and the inquest has been adjourned until July 23, 2026. This tragic incident serves as a reminder of the potential dangers associated with eating, particularly for those with health concerns.
