The Met Office has issued an amber snow warning as the UK prepares for a significant drop in temperatures and the possibility of snow blizzards. This rare alert comes amid multiple yellow weather warnings due to an unexpected cold snap affecting the country.
Forecasters predict that the weather will be “markedly colder” over the next week, with harsh frost expected later this week. A map released by the Met Office indicates that temperatures could plummet to as low as -10°C in Scotland on Wednesday.
Meteorologist Alex Burkill explained that the cold air is originating from Siberia, travelling across the Arctic Ocean to reach the UK. Met Office Chief Forecaster Neil Armstrong stated, "Cold Arctic air from the north is firmly in charge of the UK’s weather, bringing the first notable cold snap of this autumn and giving an early taste of winter weather."
Armstrong warned that winter hazards are likely in the coming days, with snow and ice posing particular risks. The coldest conditions are expected on Wednesday and Thursday, with wintry showers affecting areas exposed to the brisk northerly wind. Regions such as Northern Ireland, southwest Wales, southwest England, northeast England, and the northern half of Scotland are likely to experience these conditions.
While not every location will see snow accumulation, areas with frequent showers could see between 2-5 cm of snow. In higher elevations in Scotland, accumulations could reach 15-20 cm, and areas like the North York Moors and Yorkshire Wolds may see as much as 15-25 cm of snow.
As the UK faces this early winter weather, residents are advised to prepare for potentially hazardous conditions on the roads and to stay updated with the latest forecasts from the Met Office.
