Saturday at “Portrait in Seven Shades,” a jazz performance hosted by Kicks Band of Fargo Moorhead, will be the place to discover what happens when painting is transformed into music.
Composed by Ted Nash for the Jazz at Lincoln Center Orchestra, “Portrait in Seven Shades” is a seven-movement jazz suite that musically portrays the work of seven modern painters — Monet, Matisse, Picasso, Van Gogh, Chagall, Pollock and Dalí.
Nash’s intent was to show how painters use techniques for color, texture and composition, and how they are similar to the way musicians use timbre, harmony and rhythm.
