CARTERET COUNTY, N.C. (WITN) - A sheriff in the East has announced his plan to run for a seat in Congress.

Carteret County Sheriff Asa Buck announced his plan to run for the First Congressional District this morning on the radio program Talk of the Town.

“I am intending to seek the Republican nomination for Congress in the First District,” said Sheriff Buck over the phone on the program.

Buck has served as sheriff for more than 15 years.

The announcement comes weeks after North Carolina state legislators approved a new congressional map that moves Beaufort, Hyde, Dare, Craven, Pamlico, and Carteret counties into the 1st District.

Democrat Don Davis currently holds the seat in Congress.
