A heartbroken family has paid tribute to a 17-year-old girl killed in a hit-and-run crash that sparked an intense manhunt, leading to an arrest hours later.

The girl - identified only as Olivia by her family - was found on a roadway at Margate, in Brisbane's north, with "catastrophic injuries" about 11.30pm on Monday.

Police tried desperately to save her life on the roadside, but she died at the scene.

A manhunt was launched for the driver of a white Nissan Navara ute after reports it fled the scene, with police warning their investigation would be "relentless".

"It's a significant incident. It's a serious matter," a Queensland Police spokesperson said.

A 58-year-old man was later charged over the death.
