An impressive art collection owned by Weis Markets’ former chairman hit the Christie’s auction block on Monday night, with one painting selling for $62.2 million.
Eighteen pieces from the Collection of Robert F. and Patricia G. Ross Weis kicked off Christie’s Fall Marquee Week at the Rockefeller Center in New York.
The Weis collection, including works by Pablo Picasso, Henri Matisse and Mark Rothko, totaled $218 million, above the estimated $180 million.
The most sought-after work, Rothko’s No. 31 (Yellow Stripe), sold for $62.2 million.
Other works included La Lecture, a portrait of Marie-Therese by Pablo Picasso, which sold for $45.4 million.
