PORTLAND, Maine — The Portland City Council decided it won’t reconsider its snow parking ban fine, keeping it at $130.
Earlier this month, the council voted 8-1 to raise the fine for not moving a vehicle off the street during a snow ban from $40 to $130.
City councilor Wes Pelletier asked the council to put this issue back on the table after hearing concerns from some residents that the higher fine was unaffordable. Pelletier said he wanted to discuss possibly lowering the fine to $80.
The council voted not to reconsider.
The councilors in support of the $130 penalty hope the higher fine will increase compliance with snow ban orders, allowing plows to clear the street quicker and improving safety.
The city also added six new parking areas to give drivers more options during winter s
