Refugees have warned Labour that its proposed sweeping changes to the asylum system would not have stopped them coming to Britain.

“The UK was a lifeline,” one Afghan man told The i Paper . “And when you are drowning, you grab a lifeline without checking what it is made of.”

Charity leaders also claim the crackdown outlined by the Home Secretary will not prevent people crossing the English Channel in small boats .
