Toledo Mayor Wade Kapszukiewicz said the city is managing its two nickels well, but he wishes the city had more.

“I wish we had four nickels, eight nickels, 12 nickels,” he said at a news conference to unveil the city’s 2026 proposed budget.

The mayor confidently said the city is managing its nickels well, as evidenced by back-to-back increases in the city’s bond rating.

“As proud as we are about what that bond rating means, it doesn’t necessarily mean that we don’t have challenges on the horizon,” the mayor said. “This budget also reflects that reality.”

The mayor cited rising costs and a stagnant population that are creating financial pressures for the city.

For 2026, the mayor’s administration is proposing a $1 billion budget, similar to the budget that was passed for 2025.
