Tesla is recalling 10,500 of its Powerwall 2 AC Battery Power System units that were installed in homes nationwide. The units, which cost around $8,000, were installed from November 2020 through December 2022, according to the Consumer Product Safety Commission, .
The recall comes after Tesla received 22 reports of the rechargeable home battery system overheating, including six reports of smoking and five reports of fire related to the batteries. The fires caused minor property damage, but no injuries have been reported in connection with those incidents.
An issue with the lithium-ion battery cells can cause certain Powerwall 2 systems to stop functioning properly during use, leading to overheating.
