GRAND FORKS — After a months-long closure due to financial strain, SlapShot Pizza & Fat Alberts Subs completely sold out during its Nov. 6 soft reopening under new ownership.
The restaurant closed in early June after an expected loan fell through. Then owner Justin Torres, in declining health, couldn't afford to pay for the next truckload of ingredients to be delivered, according to Jazmine Apel, assistant manager and Torres' daughter.
Apel and her husband — Cam Apel — were working to stabilize the restaurant's finances, but by the time they learned the loan wasn't coming, she said it was too late.
"We literally had to close the door because we didn't have any product, and we didn't have any money to buy any more product," Jazmine Apel said.
