Sarnia’s police service is asking for a smaller sum in 2026 to start building a new headquarters.

Instead of $91 million to build a nearly 9,300-square-metre (100,000-square-foot) facility , the cost of which would require borrowing and raising taxes, police want $25 million to start phase one, said board chair Paul Wiersma.

“We appreciate that $91 million is a big ask for our community at this time,” he said about the request Mayor Mike Bradley recently axed from the city’s draft budget.

That move helped bring the proposed city tax hike down to 3.1 per cent.

The full station still needs to be built on about 4.7 hectares of surplus land, southeast of Highway 40 and London Line, that council donated for the project in July , Wiersma said.
