MUSKEGON, MI - Police officers in Muskegon are getting a raise.

The Muskegon City Commission unanimously approved on Nov. 10 upgrading city police officers to 2026 pay rates, along with an additional $1 per hour wage increase.

The change will be made retroactive to Oct. 1 for recruits, patrol and commanding officers.

“We wanted to look at what we could do to be competitive with not only our comparables but also our competitors that our officers have departed to,” said Tim Kozal, public safety director.

The current starting salary for police officers at the department is $61,152 annually.

New Muskegon Fire Department employees start at $66,942.

Kozal compared Muskegon to Kentwood Police Department, which starts its officers at $71,200.

He said Norton Shores officers start at $62,800
