The Detroit region's low educational attainment is part of the reason the region lags behind its peers in per capita GDP, the Detroit Regional Chamber found in its annual State of Education and Talent report.

Of similar regions, such as Cleveland, St. Louis and Atlanta, Detroit has the lowest per capita gross domestic product of about $64,000. Of those same regions, Detroit and Cleveland have the lowest educational attainment, with 55% of adults aged 25-64 years old having any postsecondary degree or certificate.

"Higher education is correlated with higher income, greater individual prosperity, greater community prosperity and vitality, and greater benefit to our entire state," Oakland University President Ora Pescovitz said during a Tuesday webinar discussing the report.
