The Income Tax Department will notify the redesigned Income Tax Return (ITR) forms and related rules by January 2026 as it prepares for the rollout of the simplified Income Tax Act.

The law, which replaces the six-decade-old Income Tax Act, 1961, will take effect from April 1, 2026, Central Board of Direct Taxes (CBDT) Chairperson Ravi Agrawal said.

Speaking at the India International Trade Fair (IITF) after launching the Taxpayers’ Lounge, Agrawal said the department is currently working on the forms and compliance framework.

“We are in the process of designing forms and rules. We are working towards putting this in place by January so that taxpayers have sufficient time to adapt their processes within their systems,” he was quoted as saying in a PTI report.
