UN head of the Climate and Clean Air Coalition for methane pollution, Martina Otto, said methane emissions are as poorly managed as carbon dioxide.

However, she noted there is hope over the next five years because methane breaks down much more quickly in the atmosphere, even though it is nearly 30 times more potent than carbon dioxide in heating the planet.

Otto added that emissions can be contained below 8% if countries act on their climate commitments, beating expectations of a 13% rise.

UN Climate Change Executive Secretary Simon Stiell continued to urge faster climate action as the summit entered its second week.
