A suspected DUI driver was arrested after a 13-year-old boy was fatally struck on his way to school on Tuesday morning, according to authorities.

The deadly crash was reported just after 8:15 a.m. in the area of Park Lantern and Dana Point Harbor Drive.

A backpack and shoes were left at the intersection, which was blocked off by crime scene tape.

A spokesperson for the California Highway Patrol said that the unidentified boy was taken to a nearby hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

The suspected driver took off after the crash but was found two to three miles away, according to the spokesperson.
