Johnny Beecher is headed west.
The Bruins’ former first-round pick, who has been a seldom-used spare part this season, was claimed off waivers by the Calgary Flames on Tuesday, ending his time in Boston.
Beecher, who was the 30th overall pick in the 2019 draft, has been largely used as a defensive forward at wing and center over his career. In 136 NHL games has 11 goals and 11 assists. He was on a one-year, $900,000 AAV contract.
The Bruins likely knew this was coming as coach Marco Sturm was unusually candid in his criticism of Beecher earlier in the day.
“This is something I think we touched on for a while, past my time, that’s for sure. For me, as a new coach, I gave him a new opportunity. And quite frankly, I thought he would be a little bit better, more effective,” Sturm told r
