A 60-year-old man was killed after a fire broke out in a multi-family home in a Newark on Tuesday morning.

The fire began in a house on the first block of Telford Street, the Essex County Prosecutor’s Office said.

A resident of the upstairs apartment, Wilber Pierre, died of his injures at an area hospital at 9:39 a.m.

Pierre’s wife was uninjured. The cause and origin of the fire, which started just before 8:25 a.m., remain under investigation.

A spokeswoman for the prosecutor’s office said no additional information was available.
