SPOKANE, Wash. — Spokane County commissioners voted unanimously this week to maintain current property tax levy rates for 2026, choosing not to implement the 1% annual increase permitted under Washington state law.

The decision comes as the county closed a projected $20 million budget gap through expense reductions and eliminating vacant positions.

"After careful consideration of our budget outlook and the economic pressures facing Spokane County families, we have decided to forgo the 1% property tax increase for 2026," said Board Chair Mary Kuney.

Commissioners noted the 2026 budget may result in property tax decreases for many residents. The board expects to finalize its 2026 budget Dec. 1.
