MAINE, USA — The Maine Human Rights Commission filed a lawsuit Monday in Kennebec County Superior Court against five school districts. The suit argues their policies preventing transgender students from participating in sports or using restrooms aligned with their gender identity violate the state’s human rights law.
The named districts are MSAD 70 in Hodgdon, RSU 24 in Sullivan, RSU 73 in Livermore Falls, the Baileyville School Department, and the Richmond School Department.
According to the complaint, Richmond adopted in October a policy requiring students to use restrooms, locker rooms, overnight accommodations, and participate in sports based on their biological sex.
