REIDSVILLE, N.C. — Rockingham County Schools has been awarded a $42 million needs-based school construction grant from the North Carolina Education Lottery to build a new Reidsville Elementary School, district leaders announced Tuesday.

The grant, awarded by the N.C. Department of Public Instruction, is the maximum amount allowed for an elementary school project. The new school will allow the district to merge South End Elementary and Moss Street Elementary into a single, centralized campus serving Reidsville students.

As part of the project, the current Moss Street Elementary site will be repurposed into a dedicated pre-K center and alternative school. That move will enable the district to close two older facilities — Booker T. Washington and Lawsonville Avenue — which officials say wil
