The construction of new homes will not fall for a fourth consecutive year in this region.

Data released Tuesday shows 3,656 homes were started between January and October, based on foundations poured. This exceeds 3,411 new homes started in all of 2024, the Canada Mortgage and Housing Corporation reports.

It’s a tiny bright spot amid a housing crisis that’s devastating the home-building industry and frustrating people who are priced out of an unaffordable market.

“There’s just nothing happening out there,” Jeff MacIntyre, president of the Grand Valley Construction Association, told Waterloo city council Monday.

His association represents 700 builders, contractors and suppliers who can’t find homes to build.
