Senate Democrats have introduced the “Social Security Emergency Inflation Relief Act,” which would provide an additional $200 per month to Social Security recipients for six months until July 2026.

The proposal comes after the Social Security Administration announced a 2.8% cost-of-living adjustment (COLA) for 2026 , which will increase the average monthly benefit by approximately $56 for retirement beneficiaries.

Democratic leaders argue that the current COLA is insufficient to address rising costs.

The legislation would benefit all Title II Social Security beneficiaries, Supplemental Security Income recipients, Railroad Retirement beneficiaries and veterans receiving disability compensation or pension benefits.
