KNOX COUNTY, Tenn. (WVLT) - A state program is helping Tennessee adults overcome financial and confidence barriers to return to college, and it’s seeing growing interest in East Tennessee.

Tennessee Reconnect provides grants that cover college costs for adults seeking new skills and careers. The program has helped students like Trevon Graham, a father who left manufacturing to pursue accounting.

“When I didn’t have it, when I didn’t know how to go pay for my books, I’ll get a laptop when my laptop went out,” Graham said. “It’s just like encouragement. Like, people are encouraging here.”

Graham said he was nervous about returning to school because of his age and financial concerns.

“Like, people are half my age. And basically, it was just like, how I’m going to compete with everybody?”
